How and when did you discover Tribes?
« on: March 13, 2017, 01:02:58 AM »
I was in middle school, over at a friend's house during Summer. His brother was playing on a Hewlett Packard upstairs, around the time Compaq and Dell were really popular desktops. Playing Rollercoaster base, he landed an MA during a duel and said "wow! that never happens." We thought Travis was a badass...after that I just had to play it and bought it a couple days later. I thought it was the coolest game I had ever seen.

Late grade 6 or early grade 7. A friend of mine showed it to me after finding out I was decent at any shooter. I thought it looked complicated but neat. Of course I was garbage the first time I played Tribes and that really through me for a loop, and made me want to get better. So I did... Countless hours and school days skipped later.

My best friend in middle school was into computer hardware and gaming, and his dad (software engineer) knew the developers.  He got us into the alpha in late 1997 where we got to dork around with some of the dudes you see in the demo recordings that came with the game.  It was rare to catch them on the test server since we were in school when they were working--it was normally just the two of us in our own server.  There weren't any bots or training missions at that point.  Then the closed beta in early 98 where there were actually people playing.  Shortly after that, installed my very first graphics card (a diamond monster 3dfx voodoo 1, 4MB) and the rest is history.  Man that was so long ago!  It almost seems like a dream.

My step brother used to play on 56k when it first came out, it was kind of funny to watch him run and run and run, lag, lag, lag, then get blasted because his connection kicked in. lolllll Then I saw the game when I was a teenager for free download on FilePlanet a few years later

p.s. - Mat!n has fucking infinite boost and nonreg.cs hax. The other  night I shot a disc at him that was about to go up his asshole and I  swear he turned around mid-air and shook his head, and my disc  disappeared. He proceeded to mow me down with his vulcan.

Dad bought this game at CompUSA and I tried it at his house and came to love it. Dad played under the name CptLonewolf and was the heavy that was a pretty good shot with a mortar. I think that was around 98 or so my senior year in high school.

After highschool, a bunch of us moved to the city for college. Three of them rented a house that quickly turned into party central. One night after playing some weed smoking game they created called FUBAR (lol... had a board, cards, dice and everything... was hilarous and reeeally fuct you up) my buddy John aka SoA Xavior called me upstairs to check out some new game he had bought earlier that week. Low and behold it was Starsiege: Tribes and mannn... I was instantly hooked! I found myself hanging out at his place almost nightly watching the action, wishing I could join in but was a broke ass student and couldn't afford my own computer. About a month later my grandfather died and willed me a little money. Naturally, my first purchase was a big, potent bag of weed and with the left overs bought my first computer and Tribes. The rest is history.

Starsiege: Tribes, 1998 - Forever in our hearts!

Dad worked in IT and his buddy at work gave him a burned copy of TRIBESSSS in 1998.

Fucking installed it and got hooked. All I did was troll people and get banned from servers at first.

Started playing renegades MODs and lo and behold I became Xtreme.

Good times.

I was in 7th grade. Parent just bought a computer for the family. My best friend at the time gave me the demo at school. I remember there only being like 3 maps on it but it was so fun. If any of you played anni back in the day his name was Gohan. Me and him created the map KWSN Duel.

I used to play on a pentium 2 - 700MHz 128MB RAM and a 25GB harddrive. I had dial up for the longest time, even after almost everyone had DSL/CABLE. I would be that one poor ass player with 400+ ping. I gathered my savings and bought a better modem because my parents wouldn't get faster internet. That only dropped my ping to 250-300 but I was so happy.

Oh man, beyond stoked to see this place is alive and well.  I reminisce about this game all the time! I was over at a friends house in I believe 1999 working on a school project (claymation movie we were making, which was awful lol)...we took a break and he fired up his custom PC, which I was already enamored with.  He then put on Tribes and let me mess around on some of the training missions....and I was hooked!  Went on to play Renegades competitively and is still to this day the best gaming I've ever had the pleasure of taking part in!  Thinking back to the matches and how they'd be called on shoutcast...I've never been a part of such a well organized and awesome community, even though I was a little shit and ran my mouth on the forums all the time LOL.
