p.s. - Mat!n has fucking infinite boost and nonreg.cs hax. The other  night I shot a disc at him that was about to go up his asshole and I  swear he turned around mid-air and shook his head, and my disc  disappeared. He proceeded to mow me down with his vulcan.

Ubuntu might be better as a first time Linux user. Debian is not super friendly.
It all depends on the problems you run into, and the community support you find online.

http://www.winehq.org/download/debian Wine for Debian
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=102 Tribes on Wine
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=2792 (Debian results, 2010, Wine 1.1.42)
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=22901 (Ubuntu results, 2011, Wine 1.3.14)

I don't think anyone has tested the new Tribes 1.40 on linux.
